Born and raised in small town Harlan, Iowa. Began doing theatre as young as 4th grade and later got a BA degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (also majoring in English with minors in Religion and Philosophy). He received an MFA in Acting from the University of Central Florida. From 2003 - 2009 he worked professionally as an actor in Orlando, Florida. Since 2009 Knoell has lived in Chicago, Illinois, working and teaching and generally practicing theatrical storytelling. In 2012 he graduated from the Second City Directing Program. He is part of the writing team behind the webcomic, Just 'Chute Me.

His love of acting started when he was six after his parents enrolled him in a local acting school where he mastered the fundamentals of his craft. One of David's first feature films saw him in a break-out role as Edgar in Vincenzo Natali's "Haunter", where he played opposite Abigail Breslin in this unique thriller-suspense feature. in 2013, David was cast as the lead as Brian Russell in the 12-episode family web/television series, "Kid's Town", which completed filming season 1 in June of 2013. David has appeared in commercial and network television series Reign and The Strain. David is a full member of ACTRA, is in grade ten and attends in one of Canada's foremost performing arts schools Toronto, Ontario majoring in drama. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with friends, family and his rescue beagle Roxas. He is represented by Shari Quallenberg at AMI Talent Management Inc.
